The organization launched in 2022 with the goal of spreading awareness and boosting the prevention of colon cancer on our island.

Colon cancer is in the top 3 most common types of cancer around the world and on Aruba. For this reason, we need to see more effort to educate our community about risks, symptoms and treatment. That's where Fundacion CORESA comes in.

CORESA represents the words COloREctal Screening Aruba. It is a new foundation that was born out of the necessity to spread awareness and boost the prevention of colon cancer on Aruba. Why is it so necessary? Because in the last decade, the cases have increased drastically on the island and we continuously see new cases of younger patients.
The colon is part of your large intestine, which is part of your digestive system. Colon cancer, also known as colorectal cancer or rectum cancer, is a disease in which cells in the colon or rectum grow out of control.
It's very important for our community to be aware that 1 simple screening can potentially save your life by detecting what could become a cancer in the future and eliminating it before it ever gets the chance to evolve. This screening is crucial the moment you turn 45 years old, even you're not experiencing any symptoms. If you're below 45 years old but you are experiencing symptoms, visit your doctor to see if a screening is necessary or if your symptoms may be caused by something else.

Fundacion CORESA was launched by its current board, which consists of its President Dr. Francis Christopher Franca from Aruba Gastro Clinic, its Secretary Dr. Justin Smit from Horacio Oduber Hospital, and its Treasurer Dr. Marcel Ho-Kang-You from General Practive Ho-Kang-You. This young, energetic group of doctors came together to create Fundacion CORESA after a broad research about colon cancer was conducted on the island, where it became clear that this foundation was a huge necessity.
